What’s in a CD-R?

The CD-R (CD-recordable) consists of various layers.

First is the label print, which doubles as a protective layer along with a layer of lacquer. next is a metal reflective layer, typically made of  gold or silver, is responsible for the reflected light we see on CDs. The next layer, the data layer, is where the data is recorded on a light sensitive layer of organic dye with lasers (hence the term ‘burning of CDs’). The thickest layer is made of clear polycarbonate is responsible for the refraction of light. There are shallow spiral groves on the surface to guide the recording of data. Data will be stored in a spiral fashion.

The entire CD-R is typically 1.2mm thick
